Am I the only person who watches The Phantom Of The Opera and secretly wants Christine to choose the Phantom? I know it doesn’t make sense. But there is something about his plight, his intensely lonely existence, that pulls a sweet creature like me in.
When I saw the theme for Jim’s SLS is Musicals/Opera I was thinking of Carmen at first (how sexy is Carmen!), but instead I went with this song because it is incredibly stirring. The sad thing is that Christine is setting a trap for the Phantom, luring him towards those who want him gone from the theatre. Yet you cannot help but wonder if she harbours a secret attraction towards him. (I know he has been very bad and his obsession with her is freaking her out by this point, but before people started dying, there was something about him that spoke to her very inner core – don’t you think?)
If you are wondering what happens after they finish this song, I have tagged the next scenes in the video at the bottom of this post. But if you have never seen Phantom Of The Opera you need to be aware that the second video has major spoilers.
- Lyrics: Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe
- Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Past the point of no return, no backward glances
Our games of make believe are at an end
Past all thought of if or when, no use resisting
Abandon thought and let the dream descend
What raging fire shall flood the soul?
What rich desire unlocks its door?
What sweet seduction lies before us?
Past the point of no return, the final threshold
What warm unspoken secrets will we learn?
Beyond the point of no return
You have brought me
To that moment when words run dry
To that moment when speech disappears
Into silence, silence
I have come here, hardly knowing the reason why
In my mind I’ve already imagined
Our bodies entwining defenseless and silent
And now I am here with you
No second thoughts, I’ve decided, decided
Past the point of no return, no going back now
Our passion play has now at last begun
Past all thought of right or wrong, one final question
How long should we two wait, before we’re one?
When will the blood begin to race?
The sleeping bud burst into bloom?
When will the flames at last consume us?
Past the point of no return, the final threshold
The bridge is crossed, so stand and watch it burn
We’ve passed the point of no return
Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime
Lead me, save me from my solitude
Say you want me with you here beside you
Anywhere you go let me go too
Christine, that’s all I ask of

Love Phantom of the Opera- a hauntingly beautiful musical. I have always loved Raoul/Christine together, never once wished the opposite

I know that is the right way to feel. Do you have soft spot for the Phantom though? Some of my friends are divided about him.

Yes, I feel sorry for him, but don’t him with Christine. He is too dangerous for Christine. Christine and Raoul, on the other hand, are in a more healthy relationship- I want them together, and part has to do with their main love song, “All I Ask of You”

A lovely choice Jenna and thanks for joining in again. Christine is very seductive when she lowers the straps on her dress so effortlessly. Beautiful singing and I should make a point of trying to watch this some day.

Lovely choice. I agree with you on Carmen. I wished I had chosen Habanera for today’s song. I love that. I too went with Phantom ☺️

Did you ever watch the sequel Love Never Dies? There is a surprising twist in the Phantom x Raoul x Christine love triangle.

I am sure we saw it in London. I remember the twist and I remember loving it.
Maybe I am wrong….but that was what I wanted!
