SLS – Cats

I know, I know, my song choice today is going to go down like English Marmite. But I could not resist it. My personal opinion of “Cats the musical is that it should have stayed on stage. It is about performers pretending to be cats, dancing and prowling around the theatre like cats. The movie did not capture the stage show.

However, it was going to be attempted at some point and it could have been worse. Not the best review! But by no means the worse review of “Cats” (the movie version of the musical). I still love TayTay. How English does she sound when she is singing the part of Bombalurina!

This is Taylor Swift (joined by Idris Elba) singing “Macavity” – the mystery cat! Such fun!!!

Cats is the genius of Andrew Lloyd Webber and is based on the poems of T.S Elliot.

Macavity’s a mystery cat, he’s called the Hiddenpaw
For he’s the master criminal who can defy the law
He’s the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad’s despair
For when they reach the scene of crime, Macavity’s not there

Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity
He’s broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare
But when they reach the scene of crime, Macavity’s not there

Macavity’s a ginger cat, he’s very tall and thin
You would know him if you saw him for his eyes are sunken in
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly domed
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake
And when you think he’s half asleep, he’s always wide awake

Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity
For he’s a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square
But when a crime’s discovered, then Macavity’s not there

He’s outwardly respectable, I know, he cheats at cards
And his footprints are not found in any files of Scotland Yard’s
And when the larder’s looted and the jewel case is rifled
Or when the milk is missing or another peke’s been stifled
Or the greenhouse glass is broken and the trellis past repair
There’s the wonder of the thing, Macavity’s not there

Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity
There never was a cat of such deceitfulness and suavity
He always has an alibi, and one or two to spare
What ever time the deed took place, Macavity wasn’t there
And they say that all the cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
I might mention Mungojerrie, Rumpleteazer, Griddlebone
Are nothing more than agents for the cat who all the time
Just controls the operations, the Napoleon of Crime
Macavity, Macavity, there’s no one like Macavity
He’s a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square
But when a crime’s discovered, then Macavity, Macavity
Macavity, Macavity

When a crime’s discovered, then
Macavity’s not there

I kinda think there was too much hype about the movie. A year in advance they were mentioning it on chat shows. When they hype it that much there is a risk it will be a flop with cinema goers whose expectations have been built up. Plus I think they should have pointed out that Cats the stage show was weird, so the movie was gonna be weird too. If you expect weird, you will not be disappointed.

So, I saw Cats on stage in London and I remember it being confusing, disturbing, but extraordinary – the choreography, the dancers moving like cats, the thin storyline, with one song after another about the individual cats.
My favorites were Magical Mister Mistoffelees and of course the stunning “Memories”.

I don’t think the movie is terrible at all. I just don’t think that it is a something a movie audience would enjoy as much as a theatre audience would.

It is an experience Peter! Not one that is easy to erase from your mind. But to be honest I think that is ok with a theatre show – they have a little more artistic license to be strange. I don’t think film is the right canvass for Cats the musical.

I am pleased you liked it Jim – I was expecting a Marmite reaction.
In England there is this spread – a bit like Vege-mite but darker and more salty. Some people absolutely love it, I just read an interview with an English celebrity who said if she ever gets remarried, she would marry a jar of Marmite. However, others hate the stuff and think it is foul. I am probably more in the latter camp. I can have the faintest scraping on a heavily buttered piece of toast, but I do not in any way enjoy it – it tastes disgusting!
