SLS – Break-Up Songs

When Jim asked us to feature break-up songs, I thought I was going to pick one of Taylor Swift’s many break-up songs. She has furnished us with so much choice! But in the end I picked a song that breaks my heart for it’s musical brilliance by one of the most talented tragedies in the modern music era.

It is too sad to write about the downfall of Amy Winehouse – it shows the devastating effect of the toxic world she had become wrapped up in – and the poison she was putting into her own little body.

I do relate to the theme in this song though and in some ways Amy was a warning to me. The idea of after a break-up returning to what you know, what you find some kind of comfort or rather numbing of the pain in. In he ex-boyfriend’s case…well he went back to his girlfriend. Amy returned to a very dark harmful place. The spiral of self-destruction is an awful one. Ten years ago her life ended. Her music has lived on. Yet is is tragic to think of the mess she was in.

For me….I have such high hopes, such great expectations when I fall in love that there is a fear of a break-up because I know that my emotions would plummet. People like me have to fight despair when someone says “I don’t love you anymore”.

But back to the track – I find it astonishing that from Amy Winehouse’s black abyss of pain and gloom came one of the most popular albums amongst critics and the public alike. It came from a turbulent emotional state after Blake Fielder-Civil left her to pursue his ex-girlfriend. An incredible album….but at the same time…the beginning of the end for a very messed up talented song-writer. This track is called “Back To Black” and was written by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson.

He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy

You went back to what you knew
So far removed from all that we went through
And I tread a troubled track
My odds are stacked
I’ll go back to black

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…

I go back to us

I love you much
It’s not enough
You love blow and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And I’m a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…

Black, black, black, black, black, black, black
I go back to…
I go back to…

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to…

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black

Jenna I loved your writeup on this song today and the Amy Winehouse story is a real tear jerker, however if it helps other people make better choices in there lives, that is very positive. This is a really nice tune, thanks for sharing it today.

It was ten years since her death recently Jim. I do hope others learn to avoid substances that can be so destructive. From her lowest point came an incredible album. But her story is just so desperately sad.
